Fanatics has entered into a partnership with Integrity Compliance 360, Inc. (IC360) and Signify Group to hold “bad actors” accountable. That means it will monitor online abuse and threats from bettors to athletes, coaches and officials.

The Bad Actor Program can suspend or even terminate customers from Fanatics Sportsbook in Pennsylvania who conduct threatening behavior online.

The program is expected to launch at the start of NFL betting and college football betting.

How the Bad Actor Program works

IC360 will collaborate with Signify Group’s Threat Matrix service to monitor bad behavior across multiple platforms. Once detected, those accounts will be placed into IC360’s ProhiBet Bad Actor platform, which can restrict wagering.

Athletes and coaches can report abusive DMs directly. Signify can assess and determine the severity and escalate serious cases, which includes to law enforcement when conduct may cross criminal thresholds.

The Bad Actor Program can assemble a list that other Pennsylvania sportsbooks could use to restrict wagering, too. It’s similar to how IC360’s existing ProhiBet platform works with players and coaches.

Scott Sadin, Co-CEO of IC360, said in a statement:

“Threats of violence and harassment in sports at arenas and on social media are increasing at an alarming rate, undermining the integrity of the sports betting industry.

“Addressing the individuals with ProhiBet BA and Threat Matrix is crucial to protecting athletes and other stakeholders from serious, long-term harm.”

The program shares intelligence with the teams and leagues so they can use their own enforcement actions.

Fanatics takes the lead

Fanatics is the first legal sports wagering operator to adopt a zero-tolerance policy to protect athletes, coaches and officials. Matt King, CEO of Fanatics Betting and Gaming, said:

“This groundbreaking program will hold bettors accountable for threats made against players, coaches, and officials. It falls in line with our core values at Fanatics — respect and tolerance for the athletes and coaches that play the games that we love.

“We encourage other operators to join the initiative because there is no sports betting potential loss that should embolden a sports betting customer to threaten or harass an athlete online.”

King is advocating for the rest of the industry to join Fanatics in either restricting or terminating bad actors in the space. Jonathan Hirshler, CEO of Signify Group, recognized that, and added:

“We commend Fanatics Sportsbook for taking a leadership position on an issue that affects athletes across every sport.

“Over the last few years, many of our global sports clients have been calling for Betting and Gaming Operators to tackle this growing problem head on.”

Fanatics offers sports wagering in 23 states including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Ohio. The Bad Actor Program applies to all markets.

There has been a broader theme in the industry for responsible gambling, consumer protections and game-participant protections.
