Despite a slower December than expected, Pennsylvania sportsbooks broke yearly records for handle and revenue in 2025.

The vertical produced nearly $8.86 billion in total bets and $883.7 million in revenue last year. The month of December yielded $797.4 million and $103.8 million in the same categories.

The second-strongest hold percentage of the year, 13.0%, helped December capture more than $100 million in earnings for operators.

Banner year for sports wagering

Just like PA online casinos, sports operators celebrated another historic year, setting all-time highs in two of the most important categories: handle and sports betting revenue.

In 2024, the industry set benchmarks in both areas, generating $8.42 billion in handle and $778.4 million in revenue. Those are yearly increases of 5.2% and 13.5%, respectively.

December did decline rather sharply, experiencing year-over-year and month-over-month decreases in handle of 10.7% and 19.5%, respectively. Revenue declined month-over-month at 17.2% but increased drastically year-over-year at 118.5%.

As the sports calendar typically slows down in the beginning of the year, it’ll be fascinating to see how far the decline goes. Next football season will be another litmus test for the market.

DraftKings makes serious push

In November, FanDuel Sportsbook pulled away from the pack, achieving 37.6% of the market share compared to DraftKings Sportsbook‘s 30.2%. However, the latter closed the gap last month.

FanDuel still led the market, amassing $283.9 million in handle. DraftKings finished with $245.5 million. Market share results show FanDuel shrunk to 35.6% while DraftKings rose slightly to 30.8%.

FanDuel Sportsbook is still the obvious leader in the clubhouse. However, DraftKings Sportsbook closed the year with momentum, and certainly hopes to take that into 2026.

PA welcomes theScore Bet

ESPN BET announced a rebrand to theScore Bet earlier in the fall, which finally came to fruition last month. December was the first full month of the new sports operator.

Customers did not have to worry about much, as accounts and balances carried over seamlessly to theScore Bet. However, the rebrand did not garner quick results.

TheScore Bet finished fifth in handle, at $30.8 million, behind the usual suspects, including BetMGM Sportsbook, Fanatics Sportsbook and bet365 Sportsbook.

That only represented 3.9% of the market, which is the first time PENN Entertainment has went below 4% in 2025. It could take some time for theScore Bet to establish itself.
