Cordish Gaming Group has named Jason Birney executive vice president and general manager of Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia. A veteran gaming operator is in charge of the South Philadelphia property’s day-to-day business.
Birney will shape the on-property experience by overseeing gaming, the hotel, food and beverage, marketing, and guest service. Cordish described the move as support for continued growth and operational execution at the casino-hotel.
New leadership at a major Philadelphia casino
Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia is situated in the Stadium District. It is one of the city’s highest-profile casino destinations. The property is owned and managed by Stadium Casino RE, LLC, an affiliate of The Cordish Companies.
Cordish’s announcement spells out Birney’s expanded role across multiple parts of the business, from casino operations to hospitality and guest experience.
In his new role, Birney will manage operations across the property. It includes more than 200 hotel rooms, approximately 2,000 slot machines, over 130 table games, and more than 15,500 square feet of meeting and event space at the Live! Event Center.
Cordish Gaming Group Chief Operating & Development Officer Joe Billhimer called Birney’s background a strong fit for the property. He cited his experience in gaming operations and his ties to the Philadelphia market.
Birney brings Penn and Caesars experience
According to the company, Birney brings more than two decades of gaming industry experience. Most recently, he served as Head of Interactive Operations at Penn Entertainment.
The release also points to nearly 17 years within the Penn Entertainment enterprise, including
- Leadership roles at Hollywood Casino Columbus and Hollywood Gaming Dayton Raceway
- Marketing positions at Hollywood Casino Columbus and Hollywood Casino Toledo
- Gaming career with Caesars Entertainment in Atlantic City.
He was also named to Global Gaming Business Magazine’s Emerging Leaders of Gaming 40 Under 40 in 2018.
That background matters for managing a full-scale casino and hotel operation.
What guests can expect at Live! Philadelphia
This is a management move focused on the day-to-day leadership of the property. For regular visitors, that usually means gradual effects rather than the immediate ones.
Areas such as service standards, marketing approach, food and beverage operations, and the overall guest experience now fall under Birney’s leadership.
Birney said he is “honored” to join the team at Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia. He described the venue as a “one-of-a-kind property” with gaming, dining, entertainment, and a prime location near Philadelphia’s sports venues.
What’s still unclear
One open question is Birney’s official start date. The announcement did not include that timing. The release also did not name a reason for the leadership change.
For now, Philadelphia casino patrons will be watching for operational or guest-experience updates under the new leadership.
