Live! Casino Philadelphia has a new executive at the helm.

Cordish Gaming Group announced this week that Jason Birney has been named Executive Vice President and General Manager of the South Philadelphia gaming, dining, and entertainment destination, taking over day-to-day oversight of the property’s gaming floor, hotel, food and beverage, marketing, and guest experience operations.

Joe Billhimer, Chief Operating & Development Officer at Cordish Gaming Group, said in a statement:

“His extensive career in gaming operations, his proven track record of leading high-performing properties, and his deep roots in the Philadelphia market make him an excellent fit for this property.”

Birney said he’s looking forward to building on Live! Casino Philadelphia‘s foundation:

“This one-of-a-kind property combines world-class gaming, outstanding dining and entertainment, and a prime location in the heart of Philadelphia’s sports action.”

Two decades of gaming leadership

Birney joins Live! Philadelphia after nearly 17 years with Penn Entertainment, where his roles included:

  • Head of Interactive Operations, overseeing ESPN BET, Hollywood Casino, and theScore’s interactive portfolio
  • Vice President and General Manager of Hollywood Casino Columbus
  • Vice President and General Manager of Hollywood Gaming Dayton Raceway
  • Vice President and Assistant General Manager at Hollywood Casino Columbus
  • Vice President of Marketing at Hollywood Casino Columbus and Hollywood Casino Toledo

His scope at Penn Entertainment also touched casino development studios, VIP and player development, sports wagering trading operations, and media and sales teams.

A return to the Philadelphia gaming market

Birney’s career began in Atlantic City with Caesars Entertainment, where he held marketing roles at Harrah’s and Showboat, followed by a stint at Harrah’s Philadelphia.

He was named to Global Gaming Business Magazine’s Emerging Leaders of Gaming 40 Under 40 in 2018. Birney holds a bachelor’s degree from Florida Southern College and an MBA from Rutgers University.

Birney does not appear to have jurisdiction over any Pennsylvania online casino operations for the property.

What Birney is taking over

Live! Casino Philadelphia, located in the Stadium District off I-95 and I-76, has been voted Best Casino in Pennsylvania by Casino Player Magazine. The property features roughly 2,000 slots, more than 130 table games including a dedicated poker room, and a FanDuel Sportsbook PA and Lounge, alongside more than 200 luxury hotel rooms.

Dining and entertainment options under Birney’s new purview include The Prime Rib steakhouse, Luk Fu from chef Jet Tila, Sports & Social, and the 10th Street Market food hall, which features Philly staples like Geno’s Steaks and Termini Bros. Bakery. The property also houses more than 15,500 square feet of event space at the Live! Event Center.

Live! Casino Philadelphia has been at the center of a sports-filled summer with the Stadium District hosting multiple FIFA World Cup games and the MLB All Star game.
