Mohegan’s Pennsylvania online casino recorded strong growth during the company’s fiscal third quarter, while adjusted EBITDA declined at its retail property in Wilkes-Barre.

Online casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) increased 21.7% from a year earlier during the quarter ending June 30. The average number of monthly active users on the Mohegan Pennsylvania online casino rose 41%.

Meanwhile, Mohegan Pennsylvania’s retail total net revenue increased 3.4% to $64.8 million, but adjusted EBITDA fell 2.6%.

The digital and property results are not directly comparable. The online figure measures gross gaming revenue, while the retail property reports net revenue from gaming and non-gaming operations.

However, the results show that Mohegan’s Pennsylvania online casino had a larger active user base and grew faster, while adjusted EBITDA at the retail property declined.

Mohegan’s Pennsylvania online audience expands

Mohegan’s supplemental earnings deck shows that the amount wagered through its Pennsylvania online casino increased 23% year over year. Deposits grew even faster, rising 66%.

Mohegan defines a monthly active user as a unique customer who placed at least one real-money wager during the month. The company did not disclose the number of active Pennsylvania users, the dollar value of its state-specific GGR, or how much customers deposited.

Average revenue per monthly active user fell 14% despite the overall GGR increase. That combination indicates that Mohegan’s digital growth came from a larger active customer base rather than increased revenue from each player.

The figures do not show how many users were new to the platform, however. A higher average monthly count can also reflect existing customers playing more consistently during the quarter.

Mohegan launched its own-branded Pennsylvania online casino in April 2024, replacing Unibet as the digital casino operating under its license.

Retail casino revenue rises despite weaker table games

Mohegan Pennsylvania’s $64.8 million in net revenue during the quarter was up from $62.6 million a year earlier. That total includes gaming and non-gaming operations at the property.

Adjusted EBITDA fell from $11.9 million to $11.6 million. Mohegan did not identify a Pennsylvania-specific reason for the decline, making it unclear which expenses offset the increase in revenue.

Slot revenue was nearly unchanged at $54.8 million, increasing 0.2%, while table game revenue declined 11.3% to $6.3 million as the table hold percentage fell from 23.1% to 20.3%.

The hotel provided a brighter spot. Occupancy increased four percentage points to 72.8%, although the average daily room rate declined 2.3% to $126.

Digital operations help drive Mohegan’s companywide growth

Mohegan Digital, which includes operations in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Ontario, generated a record $40.1 million in adjusted EBITDA. That was a 17.2% increase from the same quarter last year.

The segment’s net revenue increased 16.3% to $78.5 million. According to Mohegan’s quarterly results, companywide net revenue rose 3.1% to $450.6 million, while adjusted EBITDA increased 7.5% to $101.1 million.

Chief Operating Officer Joe Hasson said the results reflected “continued momentum in our digital business” along with demand at Mohegan’s destination resorts.

Mohegan previously said Pennsylvania had exceeded its short-term player acquisition expectations after launching its online sportsbook in November.

The latest online casino metrics support the broader growth trend, but the drop in revenue per active user shows that growth in active users has not translated into the same rate of revenue growth.
