The Casino at Nemacolin told PlayPennsylvania on Friday morning that it is laying off employees. The property did not give a specific number or percentage of the workforce it will pink-slip.

It did provide PlayPennsylvania with a comment, which read in part:

“Nemacolin has announced a strategic workforce reduction following a comprehensive evaluation of its current operations, driven by changes in available room inventory that have materially affected guest volume and operational demand; as a result, staffing levels in specific areas must be realigned to reflect these business needs.”

CBS reported that more than 140 employees got laid off.

Focused on ‘long-term stability’

The Casino at Nemacolin did realize the difficult nature in making this decision. The property went on to add in its statement:

“In making this decision, the company applied consistent criteria in accordance with its policies and evaluated multiple operational factors.

“While difficult, these adjustments are intended to position Nemacolin for long-term stability, and the company extends its sincere appreciation to all associates for their dedication and service.”

The property’s slot revenue has actually increased in recent years. During FY 2023/2024, Nemacolin generated $21.8 million, and grew to $25.3 million in FY 2024/2025. The casino is on pace to produce $26.2 million in revenue this fiscal year.

Upgrades made 3 years ago

The Casino at Nemacolin made sweeping renovations to the facility in 2023. Those included:

  • Grand Lodge: Added 97 hotel rooms
  • The Peak: Added year-round pool with cabanas and entertainment stage
  • Golf Academy: Offered expert instructors, club-fitting specialists and state-of-the-art athletic technology
  • Bleu Room: Added dining option, hidden in secret door of hotel
  • Mystic bunkers: Added new bunkers to golf course
  • Solar roof: Added more sustainable roof

The casino also reconfigured its gaming floor, updated its casino entrance, and added a high-roller area. It also began opening on Mondays and Tuesdays to become a seven-day-a-week casino.
