Investigations Finds Sensitive Information Taken in Rivers Casino Philadelphia Data Breach

Rivers Casino Philadelphia experienced a data breach of customer’s sensitive information that includes social security numbers and bank accounts. The incident happened in November.

Rivers Casino Philadelphia spokesperson, Jack Horner, told PlayPennsylvania on Tuesday regarding the situation:

“Rivers Casino Philadelphia recently responded to and investigated an incident involving unauthorized access to certain Rivers Casino Philadelphia computer systems. Upon identifying the incident, Rivers Casino Philadelphia immediately secured the involved systems and launched an investigation.

“Through the investigation, Rivers Casino Philadelphia determined that an unauthorized actor accessed and/or took certain files stored on our computer servers. Rivers Casino Philadelphia is mailing letters to individuals whose information may have been involved in the incident.”

Under the Rush Street Interactive (RSI) umbrella, the company has two Pennsylvania casinos, with one in Philadelphia and the other in Pittsburgh.

Rivers is not the only company to withstand a data breach. Caesars did so recently in September 2023, however, Harrah’s Philadelphia was unaffected.

Rivers Philadelphia contacted those affected

Levi & Korsinsky, LLP launched an investigation into the data breach that took place at Rivers Casino Philadelphia. The New York City law firm provided similar commentary to Horner in a press release:

“The investigation determined that an unauthorized third-party accessed and/or took certain files from Rivers Casino’s IT Network. Rivers Casino then launched a comprehensive review of the incident to identify the exact type of information compromised as well identify individuals impacted by the incident.

“On November 18, 2024, the review determined that individuals’ sensitive personal information was compromised in the data breach.”

Sensitive information accessed by hackers contained customers’ social security numbers and bank account information. The casino alerted those affected on Dec. 30.

Harrah’s Philadelphia went unaffected in Caesars breach

Caesars fought a cyberattack more than a year ago, and in the process, paid tens of millions of dollars in ransom money. The company conducted an investigation, which detailed the following:

“As a result of our investigation, on September 7, 2023, we determined that the unauthorized actor acquired a copy of, among other data, our loyalty program database, which includes driver’s license numbers and/or social security numbers for a significant number of members in the database.”

Caesars had to deal with a similar case. However, no customers from Harrah’s Philadelphia were affected.

The operator had to continue to pay costs in relation to the attack, which it stated in its investigation:

“We have incurred, and may continue to incur, certain expenses related to this attack, including expenses to respond to, remediate and investigate this matter.

“The full scope of the costs and related impacts of this incident, including the extent to which these costs will be offset by our cybersecurity insurance or potential indemnification claims against third parties, has not been determined.”

The extent of this latest problem at Rivers Casino Philadelphia remains unknown. However, PlayPennsylvania believes that most affected customers have already received communication from the casino to that effect.
