Pennsylvania Derby 2022

The field is finalized for the 2022 Pennsylvania Derby and the morning line odds are set. The betParx Pennsylvania Derby on September 24 is not simply a Grade I, 1 1/8-mile race. It is not simply a $1 million showcase, impressive as that is all by itself. This is the day the nation’s top horses, trainers and jockeys assemble at Parx Casino and Racing in Bensalem, making it the center of the horse-racing industry.  Parx is only the racetrack in the country to host two one-million dollar Grade 1 stakes races – the Cotillion and the betParx Pennsylvania Derby– on the same day.

Six Kentucky Derby graduates highlight the 11-horse field for Saturday’ $1 million betParx Pennsylvania Derby. It is their final appearance before the Breeders Cup Classic in Keeneland on Nov. 5.

The Pennsylvania Derby

This event benefits from a stellar administrative decision  made in 2010. That shifted the race to the last week in September, placing it perfectly between major summer events at Saratoga and the Breeders Cup in November

This subsequently elevated the profile of the Pennsylvania Derby  and made it an ideal tour stop for Breeders Cup-bound horses. The multi-million-dollar Breeders Cup weekend unfolds Nov. 4 and 5 at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. The last September weekend is a perfect time for contenders to wage their final pre-Breeders Cup race.

Previewing the 2022 Pennsylvania Derby

Zandon needs a pace to run at. He will make a strong move, but may prefer the 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby distance than this 1 1/8-mile track.

Icy Storm needs a miracle, having not won at claiming company.

B. Dawk was second in the Sir Barton Stakes. Respectable, but this is a big leap.

Skippylongstocking could be the early speed, along with We The People. Was fifth in the Preakness, third in the Belmont and the winner of the West Virginia Derby. Shorter distance and improvement angle give him much to like at an attractive price.

Cyberknife has two excellent recent efforts, winning the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park in New Jersey and stubbornly holding second in the Travers at Saratoga. Short-price for a reason, a threat.

We The People set the early fractions with Skippylongstocking in the Belmont and West Virginia Derby but was beaten in both of those efforts. More of a threat to compromise the speed than outduel it, but will be respected.

Tawny Port ran a good hard-knocking third behind Zandon, who was second, in the Jim Dandy at Saratoga. Should be right there heading for home.

Taiba was bested in a thrilling Haskell stretch duel by Cyberknife. That’s why he’ll get play. Bob Baffert would become the first four-time Pennsylvania Derby winner if Taiba does the trick.

Simplification finished behind Skippylongstocking and We The People in the West Virginia Derby. Right there on his best, but needs something to get over the top.

Naval Aviator has not graduated allowance company. This is a stab.

White Abarrio has lost form, finishing 8th in the Haskell.
