July are the dog days of summer as the sports calendar is usually at its slowest. However, Pennsylvania sportsbooks have still been able to capitalize.

Operators produced $412.5 million in handle and $52.2 million in revenue last month.

Handle decreased on a month-by-month and year-by-year basis by 14.7% and 0.6%, respectively. Pennsylvania sportsbooks enjoyed a 12.2% hold rate, which yielded a strong revenue figure for platforms.

Summer has been kind to sportsbooks

It’s no secret Pennsylvania sportsbooks suffer slightly during the lean months of June, July, and August. However, operators have certainly made the most of the summer.

Sportsbooks posted a 13.8% hold rate in June, with just baseball and NBA Finals. In July, it reduced slightly to 12.2%, which is still a significantly high rate.

August indicates the return of football, with NFL preseason and a full week of college football on Labor Day weekend. The majority of Labor Day weekend is in August this year.

Operators are certainly hoping for double-digit hold rates throughout the duration of football season. Last year, hold rate zig-zagged during football season:

  • September: 11.6%
  • October: 6.8%
  • November: 11%
  • December: 5.3%

FanDuel market share starts to diminish

In Michigan, FanDuel ceded market share to DraftKings in July. In Pennsylvania, FanDuel Sportsbook is still the clear leader in the clubhouse.

The operator recorded a 34.2% market share compared to DraftKings Sportsbook’s 27.2% in July, still holding a sizeable lead. However, it’s been shrinking in 2025.

In January, FanDuel enjoyed 43.5% of market share to DraftKings’ 24.7%. It has diminished considerably for FanDuel in the last six months.

The football season is going to be interesting to monitor. Can FanDuel regain its swagger, or is DraftKings making a legitimate push?

FanDuel, DraftKings and everyone else

FanDuel and DraftKings are the clear-cut market leaders in Pennsylvania, but there’s competition after the two sports betting giants.

Seven operators posted double-digit handle figures in July. BetMGM Sportsbook, Fanatics Sportsbook, and bet365 Pennsylvania Sportsbook rounded out the top five, with ESPN Bet finishing sixth in handle.
