The first Powerball jackpot of the new year has reached a whopping $700 million for Saturday, Feb. 4. The lump sum cash value of tonight’s jackpot prize is estimated at $375.7 million, before withholding.

At the current sum, the Powerball jackpot ranks as the sixth largest in the game’s history.

Last year, there were seven Powerball jackpots hit. Looking back at its 2022 jackpots, you’ll see a winner from Pennsylvania who took home a prize of almost $207 million on Aug. 3. The most recent jackpot-winning ticket was sold in Kansas, where there hasn’t been a jackpot winner since 2012. The Kansas winner hit a $93 million prize.

Of course, the major highlight of the year for Powerball was awarding the largest jackpot in world history on Nov. 7. That prize was over $2 billion, hit by a single ticket sold in California.

Check the winning numbers below tonight and every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday until the prize is won.

Recent Powerball drawings and winners

In the previous drawing on Wednesday, a ticket in New York matched all five white balls with Power Play to win $2 million.

Two more tickets matched the first five numbers without Power Play. Those tickets, sold in Florida and North Carolina, are worth $1 million each.

So far, this jackpot run has generated more than $60 million in sales in PA alone.  The PA Lottery reported that Friday afternoon, Powerball tickets were being sold at the rate of about 1,200 tickets each minute. That equated to sales of $2,700 per minute in the state.

The current jackpot run created a profit of more than $24.1 million in the state, which will go to benefit older residents.

When checking your tickets, remember that you can match the first five numbers in any order. The red Powerball, however, must match your last number exactly.

Powerball jackpot odds

The Powerball game works on the principle of a low-cost ticket that offers long odds for what can amount to an enormous jackpot prize. The odds of hitting its jackpot on a single ticket is always 1 in 292.2 million. However, there are nine other prizes to win on a Powerball ticket, and the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9.

As more and more tickets are sold without having a jackpot winner, the top prize amount continues to climb. Months often go by without a jackpot winner, which allows the jackpot to reach crazy high levels. A percentage of ticket sales between each drawing is added to the jackpot total.

Where to buy Powerball tickets

Powerball tickets are $2 per play, with the option to add Power Play for an additional $1. Power Play multiplies all the lower prizes by a multiplier number that is drawn during each drawing. The second-tier $1 million prize is doubled if it’s hit with Power Play.

The draw game is sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Tickets are sold through state lotteries, who retain more than half of the proceeds. The half the state lottery retains is used to pay out prizes other than the jackpot. The remainder becomes the lottery’s profit, which is used in most states to fund education and other programs.

PA Lottery and other states offer tickets online

Online and mobile lottery platforms are growing in popularity for the purchasing convenience and the automatic notifications users receive if they win. In Pennsylvania, lottery tickets and instant games are available online at the PA iLottery site or mobile app. PA residents can sign up online to get a $20 free play bonus right away, and a deposit match up to $500.

Check your state’s lottery website to see if online lottery is available where you live. States that currently offer it are Illinois, Michigan, Georgia, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Virginia and Washington D.C.
