Powerball jackpot odds
The Powerball game works on the principle of a low-cost ticket that offers long odds for what can amount to an enormous jackpot prize. The odds of hitting its jackpot on a single ticket is always 1 in 292.2 million. However, there are nine other prizes to win on a Powerball ticket, and the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9.
As more and more tickets are sold without having a jackpot winner, the top prize amount continues to climb. Months often go by without a jackpot winner, which allows the jackpot to reach crazy high levels. A percentage of ticket sales between each drawing is added to the jackpot total.
Where to buy Powerball tickets
Powerball tickets are $2 per play, with the option to add Power Play for an additional $1. Power Play multiplies all the lower prizes by a multiplier number that is drawn during each drawing. The second-tier $1 million prize is doubled if it’s hit with Power Play.
The draw game is sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Tickets are sold through state lotteries, who retain more than half of the proceeds. The half the state lottery retains is used to pay out prizes other than the jackpot. The remainder becomes the lottery’s profit, which is used in most states to fund education and other programs.
