The American Gaming Association (AGA) announced record revenues for the 2023 calendar year last week. It wouldn’t have done so without the help of Pennsylvania casinos. Two Pennsylvania regions, Philadelphia and the Poconos, ranked in the top 20 commercial casino markets in the US.

Strong establishments make up those markets in the Keystone State and are considered some of the best, not only here, but in the country, too.

Outside of Nevada, Pennsylvania offers retail casinos, PA online casinos and sports betting, making it arguably the most robust gambling state in the country.

Philadelphia and Pocono casinos receive high honors from AGA

The AGA ranked Philadelphia casinos seventh and Pocono casinos 11th on a list of 20 of the top markets in the nation based on revenue. The Philadelphia metro area hosts five casinos, which are:

As big of a city Philadelphia is, it isn’t surprising that there are that many casinos. However, it’s impressive to see that many of these facilities are a short drive from each other, and are still as successful as they are.

According to the AGA, these locations produced $1.27 billion in 2023 revenue. It finished behind the likes of Atlantic City (NJ), Chicagoland (IL/IN), Baltimore/Washington DC (DC/MD/WV), Gulf Coast (MS) and Yonkers (NY).

The Poconos consist of Mount Airy Casino and Mohegan Pennsylvania. These facilities generated $934.7 million in revenue last year. Detroit (MI), St. Louis (MO/IL) and Boulder Strip (NV) ranked ahead of the Poconos.

As a whole, land-based facilities turned in a terrific year. Casino slots and table games grossed a record $49.4 billion in 2023, up 3.3% from 2022.

Philadelphia casinos have high slot counts, contributing to success

As the seventh-ranked market in the country, it’s not surprising that the majority of Philadelphia casinos have high slot counts.

Parx Casino Bensalem, which is the seventh most profitable facility in the US, has a state-leading 2,989 slot machines. The next establishment, Wind Creek Bethlehem, supplies 2,322 slots, more than 600 fewer.

There are three other Philadelphia casinos that are in the top 10 of the state in slots offered. They are:

  • Live! Casino Philadelphia (4th): 2,002
  • Rivers Casino Philadelphia (9th): 1,521
  • Harrah’s Philadelphia (10th): 1,544

Mohegan Pennsylvania provides 1,629 slots, ranking seventh, as Mount Airy Casino features 1,613 machines for guests in the Keystone State.

The top online casinos, such as DraftKings Casino PA, Borgata Casino PA and BetMGM Casino PA, produce the most revenue because they have more games to offer players.

The concept for land-based casinos, especially in Pennsylvania, isn’t much different.
