The wait is over. Someone finally won the world record Powerball jackpot today, after the Monday night drawing was delayed. The final sum of the prize is estimated at $2.04 billion, or a cash value of $997.6 million, before applicable withholding.
Drawing delays occur when a member lottery needs more time to process its sales and play data. Powerball cannot conduct the drawing until all 48 participating lotteries submit their data.
Powerball now holds the record for the top two largest jackpots in US and world history. The second largest was a $1.586 billion prize awarded in Jan. 2016.
A player in Pennsylvania won the previous Powerball jackpot on Aug. 3.

Recent Powerball drawing numbers and winners
With the increased excitement over the huge jackpot causing more ticket sales than usual, Powerball is getting more lower-tier winners than normal. That includes two PA players that hit the second-tier prize of $1 million on Saturday. To win that prize, a ticket has to match all five white balls drawn, but not the red Powerball. Those winning tickets were sold at:
- Saibaba’s Aashirwad Forever, 4247 West Swamp Road, Doylestown, Bucks County
- Get Go, 998 Hayden Boulevard, Elizabeth, Allegheny County
Fourteen tickets sold in other states also matched all five white balls to win the $1 million prize. Those tickets were sold in California (3), Colorado (2), Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York and South Dakota.
Another ticket, sold in Kentucky, also matched the first five numbers with Power Play, to win $2 million. Power Play is the $1 ticket add-on that multiplies all prizes other than the jackpot.

What are the chances of hitting the Powerball jackpot?
Your odds of hitting the Powerball jackpot on a single ticket always remains the same, at 1 in 292.2 million. There are nine ways to win on a Powerball ticket, with the overall odds of winning a prize being 1 in 24.9.
The jackpot is based on the amount of ticket sales leading up to the drawing. With each consecutive drawing without a jackpot winner, a percentage of the sales is added to the jackpot. A whopping jackpot, like the one just hit, attracts even more players and tends to get large increases with each passing drawing.
Powerball tickets are $2 per play. Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Tickets are sold through state lotteries, who retain more than half of the proceeds from the sales to pay lower-tier prize winnings and fund worthy programs like education, environmental conservation or senior services.
