The Powerball jackpot reset on Aug. 15 after hitting for $169 million on Aug. 12.
For now, when the Powerball jackpot resets, it is an estimated $20 million. However, for Wednesday, Aug. 19, the estimated jackpot is only $22 million. So, what gives?
Powerball jackpot minimums based on sales and winners
To start, there was one ticket sold for $1 million that matched all five white balls. In addition, 15 tickets matched four numbers along with the Powerball for $50,000. However, of the 15, 5 tickets opted for the $1 Power Play option that tripled their prize to $150,000 each.
Previously, we covered that draw lotteries such as Powerball and Mega Millions decided to do away with minimum increases for the interim. Thus, jackpot increases are based on ticket sales and interest rates for the time being.
Remember for the Aug. 15 drawing that the jackpot reset to $20 million. Thus, it could very well be that ticket sales were low due to less interest and excitement surrounding a smaller jackpot.
As a recap, the winning numbers for Aug. 15 were 5 – 12 – 34 – 45 – 56 with a Powerball of 3. The Power Play multiplier was also 3X.
