One ticket, sold in Ohio, hit the Powerball jackpot for $252.6 million on Wednesday, April 19. The jackpot ended up slightly higher than initially estimated, with a cash option of $134.7 million before withholding.
Wednesday’s win was Ohio’s fourth Powerball jackpot won in the state since sales began there in 2010.
The draw game now begins the fourth jackpot run of the year. The Ohio win was the second jackpot this year to cross the $200 million mark.
Earlier this year, its jackpot was up to $162.6 million when a single ticket in Virginia matched all six numbers to win the prize on March 4. The first jackpot hit this year was the fifth-largest Powerball jackpot in history, coming in at $754.6 million. One ticket sold in Washington won that jackpot on Feb. 6.

Recent Powerball drawings and winners
Monday’s big drawing didn’t produce a jackpot winner, nor a second prize $1 million winner in any of the 48 jurisdictions.
One PA ticket hit for $50,000 by matching four of the five white balls, plus the red Powerball. That was the largest Powerball prize won in the state on Monday.
Over the weekend on Saturday, two tickets matched the first five white balls to hit the second-tier prize of $1 million. The winning tickets were sold in New Jersey and Michigan.
When checking your tickets, remember there are nine ways to win a prize on a Powerball ticket. Make ticket checking easier by using the PA Lottery mobile app, or buy tickets online to get automatic notifications.

Powerball jackpot odds
Your chances of hitting the Powerball jackpot on a single ticket never change. The odds are always 1 in 292.2 million. The $1 million second-tier prize has much better odds at 1 in 11.7 million, but it’s still a longshot. Not every drawing has a second-tier prize winner.
However, there are nine total prizes to win on each ticket, and the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9.
Each passing drawing without a jackpot winner allows the big prize to continue to grow. After several weeks or months without a jackpot winner, the prize can reach elevated levels. Huge jackpots attract even more players to buy tickets, which drives the prize even higher. It’s not unusual for more than one ticket to hit the jackpot when the prize is very high. In that case, any winners evenly split the prize.
Where to buy Powerball tickets
Tickets are $2 per play, with the option to add Power Play for an additional $1. Power Play multiplies all prizes other than the jackpot by a multiplier number that is drawn each time. However, the second-tier $1 million prize is only doubled if it’s hit with Power Play.
Tickets are available in 45 states, plus the Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. State lotteries manage ticket sales in each jurisdiction. More than half of the proceeds from Powerball sales stay in the state. The lottery then pays out all the prizes won, except for the jackpot. The profit made by the state lotteries are used in most states to fund education and other programs.
