Powerball starts off the week of Jan. 24 with a hefty jackpot of $82 million up for grabs. If a potential winner decides to take the lump sum cash option, they would get $57.2 million before taxes.

No one took home the Grand Prize in the last drawing, but there were a couple notable winners. A ticket sold in FL matched the first five numbers, but not the Powerball, grossing $1 million for that winner. A player in GA who paid an extra $1 for the Power Play option on their ticket also matched five and had their prize doubled to $2 million.

Know Your Lotto Games Before Choosing What to Play

A little behind-the-scenes knowledge can help you make an educated decision on what Scratch-Off and Fast Play games to play. For example, your odds of winning a prize are always printed on the back of the ticket. The PA Lottery says that winners are distributed randomly, and neither they nor Lottery retailers know where winning tickets will show up.

There is other information that might help you choose what game to play. For Scratch-Offs and Fast Play games in PA, there are a set number of top prizes and lower-tier prizes for each game. On their website, the PA Lottery publishes how many of each prize are still available to be won. See them here Scratch-Offs Prizes Remaining and here Fast Play Prizes Remaining.

You might choose to buy a ticket with a higher number of large prizes remaining. Another piece of information that would be helpful is knowing how many total tickets have already been sold, or how many are still available to buy. The Lottery doesn’t publish that information, but if you pay attention, you’ll know which games are newer and which games have been around for a while.

You can infer that older games have sold more tickets than newer games. While it’s still a guessing game, and your odds of winning remain the same on any ticket you purchase, it couldn’t hurt to use the information available to you when playing the lottery. As the saying goes, knowledge is power!
