Forgotten Powerball ticket leads to $50K

Casey Langan of West Des Moines, Iowa, nearly missed out on claiming a $50,000 Powerball ticket. For nearly a year, the ticket was inside of his work car’s center console. Unfortunately — or fortunately — for Langan, he was part of a recent layoff. Thus, he started to clean out the work car.

As luck would have it, he found the ticket while cleaning. Langan immediately checked the numbers and received a shock when he realized that his Jan. 18 ticket was a second-prize winner, just shy of taking the whole jackpot, but good for $50,000.

Even more, Langan was just five weeks out from his ticket expiring. His advice for anyone who has a lottery ticket that is unchecked?

“Check every single one of those!” Langan says.

Online lottery winners get automatic notification

However, there is a convenient way to ensure that you never miss out on checking your lottery tickets.

Right here in the Keystone State, the PA online lottery automatically notifies winners. Moreover, most winnings are automatically paid out right into your player account. However, big winnings will still need to be claimed in person at the PA Lottery offices.

Additionally, there are other states that offer online lottery sales:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

No matter what, stay safe this holiday season, and please play responsibly.
