Another exciting Powerball drawing happens tonight, as the jackpot continues to rise. The Grand Prize has reached an estimated $83 million for May 14. A potential winner in tonight’s drawing could choose to take the cash value of $47.6 million in a single payment.
Whichever option a winner might choose, large prizes are subject to federal and state-level taxes. The IRS initially takes 24%, and the state tax varies. In Pennsylvania, a windfall like this is taxed at 3.07%. A jackpot winner in the Keystone State could expect to see about $34.7 million of that lump sum value.

You probably already know that PA Lottery proceeds are used to benefit older Pennsylvanians. If you’ve ever wondered exactly how the money is used, the PA Lottery’s Annual Benefit Report shines some light on that question.
Over the years, the PA Lottery has been able to contribute more than $31 billion to programs that include:
- Local Services, Senior Centers & Meals
- Low-Cost Prescription Assistance
- Free and Reduced-Fare Transportation
- Care Services
- Property Tax & Rent Rebates
For the 2020-2021 fiscal year, the $1.3 billion raised provided more than $222 million in home rebates, 17.7 million free transit rides, 9.4 million meals to senior centers and 4.22 million prescriptions across Pennsylvania.
PA Lottery also offers online Powerball tickets
All lottery games sold in the state contribute to make those things possible. Though Powerball and Mega Millions are multi-state games, the state lotteries still receive proceeds from the ticket sales.
And in PA, players can purchase Powerball, Mega Millions and other draw lottery tickets online or on the PA iLottery app. Online players get automatic notifications of their winning tickets.
