Figures released on Monday by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board show the true power that NFL betting brings for the state’s gambling industry. Pennsylvania sportsbooks handled $645.2 million in the month of September, a $282 million increase from August and an 11.5% increase from last year. Revenue in September was $75.3 million, a 79% MoM increase from August.
PA online casinos (including poker) recorded the second largest month ever reaching $139.7 million in gross revenue. Pennsylvania online casinos set the record for gross revenue back in March with $147.7 million.
The state is expected to cross the $1 billion threshold for online casino tax revenue next month.

- PA sportsbooks continue to see strong year-over-year growth (handle up 11.5% YoY) here in Year 4 of online NFL betting. The summer slide is over as sportsbooks generated the third-highest month in handle in 2022. Sportsbooks continue their impressive hold numbers, recording a second straight month above 10%. In June, Pennsylvania sportsbooks’ hold percentage was 5.8%.
- FanDuel has consistently maintained market share of 38-42% for online bets placed in PA but had much stiffer competition in September. Last month, DraftKings Sportsbook trailed FanDuel by just $5 million in total handle, the closest in handle they’ve ever been since launching in November 2019. FanDuel still has the edge on hold with 15.7% compared to DraftKings’ 8.2%.
- PA has settled into No. 5 nationally in terms of sports betting handle, behind NY, IL, NJ, NV.

- Online slots ($104,824,119) and online table games ($32,177,304) continue to show strong year-over-year growth, up 26.8% and 22.1% respectively. They are also helping to fuel overall PA gaming revenue growth, which was up 7.9% year over year to $448.5 million.
- Online casinos had their second-best month ever in September posting $139.7 million in revenue. Pennsylvania has 18 online casinos and still plenty of room to grow with more casinos on the way.
- PA online casinos have brought in $993 million in lifetime tax revenue for PA and local entities in just over 3 years. They will soon surpass $1 billion lifetime.
