The National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS) concluded its winter meetings earlier this month and is coming to Pennsylvania later this summer. The NCLGS announced that Rivers Casino Pittsburgh is hosting the group’s summer meetings in July.
NCLGS President, Shawn Fluharty, also created a new committee to discuss regulating online casinos across the country. PA online casinos and their success are sure to be a topic of discussion.
Rivers Casino Pittsburgh to host NCLGS summer meetings in July
Rivers Casino Pittsburgh is becoming a venue that is able to host large events, such as the NCLGS summer meetings. The gatherings will be held from July 17-20 inside the casino, as well as at The Landing Hotel.
The relatively new hotel opened in September 2022 after years of construction, which had been interrupted because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a 2021 press release announcing construction resumption, Steven Massaro, president of the construction company Massaro Corporation, said:
“The literal connection of the two facilities is fundamental for integrating the casino’s gaming and entertainment complex with the new hospitality venue.”
The addition of The Landing Hotel makes Rivers Casino Pittsburgh a much more desirable location, not only for gamers, but for business people and events, too.
The hotel is 133,000 square feet and seven stories high, supplying 219 rooms. The project, which began in 2019, cost $60 million.
NCLGS forming online casino committee to discuss regulation expansion
It’s no secret that sports betting attracts attention, as people, including legislators, are much more familiar with it. To that point, 38 states have legalized sports betting compared to just six for online casinos.
At the NCLGS meetings earlier this month, Fluharty announced a new online casino committee. The new council will not only raise awareness of online casinos, but also talk about how to legalize them in more states. Fluharty said at the meetings:
“NCLGS is forming a committee on model legislation, and our first task is implementing and organizing model legislation on iGaming.”
Fluharty mentioned he hopes to provide more detail on what the committee will look like at the NCLGS summer meetings at Rivers Casino Pittsburgh.
Policymakers will be able to use Pennsylvania as a model for implementation. The Keystone State legalized online casinos in 2017 and has grown to be the most robust market in the country.
Pennsylvania online casinos set a revenue record in two of the last three reported months:
- September: $187.3 million
- October: $186.9 million
- November: $191.9 million
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) is expected to release December figures this week, which will likely post similar numbers to the previous three months.
The new committee should look no further than Pennsylvania, which has had the most success of any state offering legal online casinos.
