Can jackpot lottery winners remain anonymous?

Apparently, there is some confusion regarding whether lottery jackpot winners can remain anonymous in PA, according to Bucks County Courier Times. Recently, the $516 million jackpot was claimed anonymously by the “Peace of Mind” trust.

Yet, in 2005, other PA winners from the WLT Trust had full names plus cities and states released after claiming a $93.4 million jackpot. On the other hand, 2013 brought a change where the PA Lottery only publicizes the winner’s first name and first initial of the last name. This change came from previous attempts by the PA House to allow lottery winners a chance to claim prizes anonymously, which did not pass.

Finally, while the article continuously references the Lottery Winner’s Handbook found on the PA Lottery site, it appears that the Handbook is no longer available. Thus, for now, it appears that PA jackpot lottery winners can remain anonymous because the trust “Peace of Mind” successfully claimed the prize.
