In last Friday’s Mega Millions drawing, one player became a millionaire overnight, but the grand prize remained at large. For tonight, Sept. 13, the jackpot prize jumps to $231 million. The lump sum cash value of the prize would be $124 million for a winner tonight, before applicable withholding.
Tuesday’s $1 million-winning ticket was sold in Wisconsin. The ticket matched the first five numbers, 16-21-54-55-69, but missed the Mega Ball 22. The odds of hitting the $1 million prize are about 1 in 12.6 million.

Tuesday’s Mega Millions winner may have hit it big, but they missed out on the opportunity to have their winnings doubled. With Mega Millions’ Megaplier option, any non-jackpot prize is multiplied by either 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x depending on the multiplier number selected before the drawing. Every Mega Millions jurisdiction except California offers the Megaplier option. It costs an additional $1 for each play.
This means that a second-tier winner could potentially have their $1 million prize boosted to $5 million on a particularly lucky day. The least likely multiplier, the 5x, comes with odds of 1 in 15. More likely, the 2x and 3x will come up, having odds of 1 in 3 and 1 in 2.5, respectively. The odds of a 4x multiplier being drawn are 1 in 4.
Powerball offers a similar ticket add-on called Power Play, which can multiply lower-level prizes by up to 10 times. But, here’s the catch: The second-tier $1 million prize will only be doubled, no matter what multiplier is drawn. Only the prizes under the $1 million level are affected by higher multipliers.
