As the Mega Millions jackpot closes in on $500 million for tonight’s drawing, it’s officially the second largest jackpot of the year. For Friday, Oct. 14, the official estimate of the jackpot is $494 million. Most jackpot winners choose to take the cash value of the prize, which would be $248 million before taxes, for a winner tonight.
If there’s no big winner, the jackpot will climb well above the half-billion mark. The last jackpot won, on July 29, was the second largest in Mega Millions history at $1.337 billion. Tonight will be the 22nd drawing in a row since the last time the jackpot was hit.

Mega Millions is simple to play
A Mega Millions ticket is only $2. In most states, players can add the Megaplier option for an additional $1, which multiplies all prizes other than the jackpot.
Players pick six numbers from two separate sets of numbers. Choose the first five from 1 to 70 (the white balls). Then choose one number from 1 to 25 (the yellow Mega Ball).
The first five numbers will print on your ticket in numerical order. You can match them in any sequence, because there is only one of each number in the pool. The Mega Ball stands alone, and must be matched by the final ball drawn.
You win the jackpot by matching all six numbers. Match just the five white balls, and you win the second prize of $1 million.
The easiest way to play is to ask the clerk at any lottery retailer for a “Mega Millions quick pick.” This allows the lottery terminal to randomly select numbers for you, and print your ticket.
PA residents can buy tickets online
