The Mega Millions officially kicked off on May 17, 2002 and there was a jackpot winner for the premier drawing. A $28 million jackpot was won by a ticket sold in Illinois. Then, the second jackpot winner was crowned just a short week later, making for two jackpot winners in the first three drawings.

The history of success continues with 198 jackpots won by 223 individual tickets. Out of this amount, 20 jackpots were shared by two or more winning tickets in a lottery pool.

In total, 23 jackpots were worth more than $300 million, with the record-holding $1.5 billion jackpot won in South Carolina on Oct. 23, 2018. This jackpot is the world’s largest lottery prize ever won on a single ticket. Finally, in second place is the $1 billion jackpot won in Michigan on Jan. 22, 2021.
