With no jackpot winner in the last drawing, the Mega Millions Top Prize gets a $19 million boost for May 20. The jackpot prize offered tonight is estimated at $131 million. The lump sum cash value is about $75 million before taxes.

The jackpot amount is based on expected ticket sales. As the Grand Prize gets higher, more people buy tickets, which results in bigger increases between drawings. The actual jackpot prize could be higher than estimated.

On Tuesday, a Mega Millions ticket sold in Florida hit a whopping $4 million prize by matching all five white balls, but not the gold Mega Ball. Without the Power Play option on that ticket, it would have been worth $1 million.

Check tonight’s Mega Millions winning numbers here, after the drawing at 11:00 p.m. ET.

Are Powerball and Mega Millions really that similar?

At first glance, the two major multi-state lottery games seem almost identical. However, there are some differences that a keen observer might pick up on. For example, the odds of winning in each game are slightly different. The odds of hitting the jackpot prize are 1 in 292.2 million for Powerball and 1 in 302.5 million for Mega Millions.

The prize structure differs between the two games, as well. The second-tier prizes are identical: $1 million for matching the first five balls on either game. But matching four of the first five numbers, plus the Powerball, will fetch you $50,000, while the same combination on Mega Millions (four of the five white balls, plus the Mega Ball) is only worth $10,000.

For the next few prize tiers, Powerball offers slightly better odds, but much lower prizes. Matching any four numbers wins you $100 on Powerball, but Mega Millions pays $500 for matching four of the first five, or $200 for three of the first five, plus the Mega Ball.
