The Mega Millions jackpot has been growing with each drawing for almost a full month now, reaching an estimated $81 million for April 5. If a potential jackpot winner from Tuesday night chooses to take the money and run, the lump sum cash option totals about $51.5 million.

You can buy a Mega Millions ticket at any Pennsylvania Lottery retailer or online, only at the official PA iLottery site. To play, you’ll choose five numbers from a pool numbered 1 to 70, and one number from 1 to 25.

When the drawing is held, five white balls from the 1 to 70 set will be drawn before the gold Mega Ball is drawn from another set of balls numbered 1 to 25. There are nine ways to win a prize. Prizes range from $2 to the current jackpot amount. You must match all six numbers to win the jackpot.

How random are PA Lottery winning scratch-off tickets?

The latest major PA Lottery Scratch-Off prize announced was a $1 million Top Prize won in Montgomery County on the $1,000,000 Cash King ticket. If it seems like you hear about winners in certain counties more than others, you’re not crazy! Montgomery County, for example, is the third-highest winning county in PA. The latest available figures on the PA Lottery’s Map of Winners shows that players in Montgomery have won more than twice as much prize money as the number 10 county, Berks.

So what gives? Should every PA county see nearly the same amount in Lottery prizes? The answer is absolutely not. Lottery prizes are not evenly spread out over all the state’s counties. In order to ensure fairness and transparency, winning tickets are distributed at random. The PA Lottery does not control nor know where winning tickets will end up.

Then, how do we explain certain counties having more winners? As explained on palottery.com, “…with random distribution, regions with larger numbers of players tend to have a proportionate ratio of players winning.”

Montgomery County happens to be the third highest-populated county in the state. As would be expected, the two counties with higher population than Montgomery have also won more dough over the years. So as you can see, you have the same chances of winning a Scratch-Off or other lottery prize in one PA county as you do in any other county.
