PlayPennsylvania in the media

Dec. 21, 2021 – Philadelphia Business Journal (Laura Smythe) | Pennsylvania casinos and sports books break revenue records in November

Katie Kohler, an analyst at trade publication PlayPennsylvania.com, said it’s difficult to imagine the state’s sports books being in a better position to capitalize on the busy winter months ahead.

“Football has spurred the current spike, but the wave that sports books are riding is about more than one game or one sport,” she said. “… Online sports books continue to expand their reach, and bettors are becoming increasingly comfortable with diverse forms of betting.”

Oct. 24, 2021 – Sports Book Review (Dave Bond) | Pennsylvania narrowly misses all-time sports betting handle record in September

Katie Kohler, an analyst for PlayPennsylvania, on the surge commented:

“Nothing stirs the sports betting drink like football, even when the (Pittsburgh) Steelers and the (Philadelphia) Eagles get off to slow starts. Penn State made a difference in boosting interest, which certainly helps. The bottom line is every sportsbook wants a strong start to the football season, and that is exactly what Pennsylvania’s industry got in September.”

“Pennsylvania’s sportsbooks are in a position to generate more in wagering this fall than the $1.5 billion that was bet in all of 2019,” added Dustin Gouker, an analyst for PlayUSA. “The industry will in all likelihood continue to grow in the months ahead, gaining steam in October with baseball’s postseason and the opening of the NBA season. Sports betting should produce some eye-popping numbers over the next few months.”

Oct. 20, 2021 – SBCamericas.com (Conor Porter) | Pennsylvania sportsbooks hit almost $580m in September wagers

Katie Kohler, analyst for PlayPennsylvania, commented: “Nothing stirs the sports betting drink like football, even when the Steelers and the Eagles get off to slow starts. Penn State made a difference in boosting interest, which certainly helps. The bottom line is every sportsbook wants a strong start to the football season, and that is exactly what Pennsylvania’s industry got in September.”

Dustin Gouker, analyst for the PlayUSA Network, which includes PlayPennsylvania, stated: “Pennsylvania’s sportsbooks are in a position to generate more in wagering this fall than the $1.5bn that was bet in all of 2019.

“The industry will in all likelihood continue to grow in the months ahead, gaining steam in October with baseball’s postseason and the opening of the NBA season. Sports betting should produce some eye-popping numbers over the next few months.”

Gouker added: “Barstool hasn’t quite achieved the ‘world domination’ that founder Dave Portnoy proclaimed with the app launched, but it has performed well. No operator has seriously challenged the dominance of FanDuel and DraftKings yet. But Barstool has at least proven to be an important player in Pennsylvania.”

Kohler concluded: “Online casinos have a symbiotic relationship with online sportsbooks. When sportsbooks do well it tends to lift the fortunes of online casinos, and vice versa. We saw that in action in September.”

Oct. 20, 2021 – Las Vegas Advisor (David McKee) | Pennsylvania rebounds; Mega jottings

Explained analyst Katie Kohler, “When sportsbooks do well it tends to lift the fortunes of online casinos, and vice versa. We saw that in action in September.”

Oct. 19, 2021 – TribLIVE (Megan Tomasic) | Report: Pennsylvania casino revenues top $415M in September

“Sportsbooks reaching $1 billion in monthly handle is a reminder that there is no gaming market in the U.S. that is playing on New Jersey’s level,” said Eric Ramsey, an analyst for PlayUSA, which includes Play New Jersey. “The relentless growth in online sports betting and casino gaming continues to lift the entire industry.”
