Kenny Pickett Rookie of the Year Odds Puts Him As Early Favorite

For the first time in 18 years, the Pittsburgh Steelers needed a quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger retired. They immediately filled that hole in the 2022 NFL Draft by selecting University of Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett with the 20th overall pick. Pickett was the only quarterback taken in the first two rounds.

Pickett had an illustrious career at the University of Pittsburgh. He finished his five-year career as the Panthers’ all-time leader in passing yards (12,303), completions (1,045), total touchdowns (102) and passing touchdowns (81).

Pickett’s senior season is what made him a first-round pick. He threw for 4,319 yards and 42 touchdowns in 2021, and led his team to the Peach Bowl. His passing yards, passing touchdowns and total touchdowns (47) were all single-season records.

He also finished as Pittsburgh’s winningest starting quarterback in school history with 32 wins.

Pickett does not enter a crowded quarterback room in Pittsburgh. The Steelers signed Mitch Tribusky to a two-year deal in free agency and still have Mason Rudolph.

Pickett obviously figures to be Roethlisberger’s heir apparent.

Last year, No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence opened as the favorite to win OROY at +400 odds and Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase won the award. Chase entered last season at +2000.
