Survivor Pool 101: Here’s how to play

If you’ve never joined a survivor pool before, the DraftKings promotion is the perfect reason to try one.

Players will choose one NFL team each week. All games, including Thursday Night Football, are eligible that week. Selections lock at 1 p.m. every Sunday. And each NFL team can only be chosen once.

If your chosen team wins that week, you survive. If your choice loses, you’re out. It’s that simple. And the last surviving player in the DraftKings pool will take home $1 million.

At press time, more than 140,000 players had already taken advantage of the offer. It’s a no-brainer, with a chance at free money every step of the way.

Which teams might be a good Week One survivor pick?

Survivor pools present an interesting challenge, since each NFL team can only be selected once. Some players like to look at the NFL schedule, hoping to stay a few weeks ahead of their competition. Others lean on the oddsmakers by looking at the NFL betting lines each week. To that end, let’s take a quick look at the Week One point spreads at our region’s sportsbooks.

Bet Rivers Sports Book, PlaySugarHouse and DraftKings Sportsbook tend to have the same betting lines for NFL games. FanDuel and FOX Bet typically vary.

In Week One, the Kansas City Chiefs are the biggest favorite in their matchup with the Houston Texans. The Chiefs are currently 10-point favorites at BetRivers, PlaySugarHouse and DraftKings in the Sept. 10 game on Thursday Night Football that opens the NFL season.

The other teams that are currently favored by a touchdown or more are as follows:

  • Baltimore Ravens (-7.5) at Cleveland Browns
  • Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis Colts (-7)
  • San Francisco 49ers (-7) at Arizona Cardinals

And if you prefer to make a homer pick, Pennsylvania’s pro teams are both in action Week One as well. The Philadelphia Eagles are 6.5-point favorites in a road game against the Washington Football Team that kicks off Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. And a day later, the Pittsburgh Steelers are 3.5-point favorites in their Monday night game against the New York Giants.

The promotion is live now. Go for the gold.

There’s nothing to lose. Even if you miss out on the Golden Ticket and fail miserably with your survival pool picks, the DraftKings reward is well worth your time. And after all, everything is free to enter.

It’s one of those win-win propositions that don’t arrive nearly often enough.

So reserve your entry and go after that DraftKings Golden Ticket. Maybe, just maybe, you’ll hit the jackpot. But even if you don’t, you’ll still win.

And free money is the best money.
