Time to roll out the red carpet. DraftKings Casino is now fully operational in Pennsylvania and available 24/7 following successful testing periods on April 28 and 29.
The company received regulatory approval during Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board’s monthly meeting Wednesday morning and soft-launched the same day.
DraftKings makes Pennsylvania home to ten online casinos. Last week, Caesars released its iGaming offering through its partnership with Harrah’s Philadelphia.

DraftKings expands its kingdom
The company built on daily fantasy sports became a publicly traded company last week. DraftKings’ expanded offerings now include sports betting and casino.
Chief Compliance Officer Tim Dent said on Wednesday:
“DraftKings appreciates the collaborative working relationship we have established with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board and thanks them for their thoughtful leadership in creating a consumer-focused, competitive iGaming market. We look forward to successfully completing the soft launch phase of the process and receiving our iGaming license so that we can be fully operational in Pennsylvania on May 1.”
DraftKings online sportsbook operates in Pennsylvania through a partnership with The Meadows. However, The Meadows did not apply for an online casino license. Instead, the DraftKings iGaming platform will operate under Hollywood Casino’s license.
Penn National owns The Meadows and Hollywood Casino and under the PA gambling expansion law, each land-based partner can have multiple interactive parters acting as skins.
With all of PA’s brick-and-mortar casinos closed since mid-March, online casinos set records for revenue ($24.3 million) and total play. It provided a small consolation since the PGCB reported overall gaming plummeted 51% month-over-month and sports betting handle decreased 60%.

DraftKings sportsbook a strong player in PA
During the April 29 PGCB tele-meeting, DraftKings sportsbook, which had been operating in PA with conditional approval, received approval to operate for five more years.
DraftKings’ longtime rival FanDuel holds the crown as the top online sports betting operator in Pennsylvania. They have held the spot since August 2019 and account for about half of each month’s handle.
DraftKings entered the fray in November when the NFL and college football seasons were already in progress. They immediately reaped the benefits of a strong DFS customer base and brand recognition.
Within two months, DraftKings was taking the second most bets in the state, leaping over Parx, Rivers Philadelphia, FOX Bet and Rivers Pittsburgh.
DraftKings Sportsbook Director of Operations Johnny Avello commented on the operator’s performance in a January interview:
“Our position is to make a lot of noise and we are going to continue to do that. We have a long way to go. We are never content so we will continue to move the needle in Pennsylvania. It was quite a jump for us, though. If you look at everyone behind us, we are gaining ground and everyone is a distant third and fourth. We are happy with the progress for the month.”
With all major sports sidelined as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, DraftKings has been forced to get creative. As a result, they presented users with different options such as Tiger King pools, the MLB Dream Bracket, and iRacing.
Now, DraftKings has another revenue stream, in the form of online casino games in PA.
