Pennsylvania reached a milestone that no one saw coming when online casinos became legal. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported operators generated an all-time high of $204.2 million in December revenue. It’s the first time ever that any state has eclipsed the $200 million threshold.
PA online casinos have been hinting at this possible landmark total over the last three months. The previous three months also featured two records:
- September: $187.3 million
- October: $186.9 million
- November: $191.9 million
Pennsylvania ended 2023 breaking three of its own US online casino records in four months. PlayPennsylvania Managing Editor, Chris Imperiale, said:
“Pennsylvania online casinos continue to break records. This December, they exceeded $200 million in gross revenue for the first time ever, finishing the month with a total of over $204 million. The new all-time, all-market US mark narrowly took down the previous best from November by about $12 million. December saw an increase in production of about 6.4% from last month, while the performance topped year-over-year figures by more than 22%. This is now the fourth consecutive month with revenue surpassing $186 million. With 2023 now complete, PA online casinos ended the year with over $2.1 billion in revenue, setting another new record.”

Quick analysis from December PA online casino figures
- The first takeaway is the simple fact that Pennsylvania eclipsed a monumental milestone in terms of revenue. When online casinos became legal in 2017, the idea of the state generating $200 million of earnings in a single month was extremely far-fetched. Now that operators achieved the impossible, it has us asking what is in store for them in 2024. How much more revenue can they earn?
- Pennsylvania online casinos generated $2.1 billion in 2023 revenue, which is easily a new record. Operators recorded $1.67 billion in 2022 revenue. The same question applies to the first takeaway: How high can operators go?
- Pennsylvania online casinos delivered $2 billion in lifetime taxes to the state with December’s output. In the record-setting month, operators generated north of $70 million in taxes, which put the lifetime total at $2.03 billion.
