Louisiana is the newest state to offer legal online sports betting, but they did things a bit differently than most states.
While most states have counties, Louisiana has parishes. And while there doesn’t appear to be any legal differences between the two, each one of the 64 parishes in the state actually has a say on whether or not they want to allow sports betting to become legal.
Although 56 of the 64 parishes approved both in-person and online sports betting, the remaining eight that chose to decline will be geofenced to prevent any bets from taking place. So yeah, any residents of the geofenced areas have to drive to neighboring towns to place their bets online. A bit different, yes. Effective? We shall soon see!
