Betfred is the official sponsor of the fight between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury on Feb. 22. The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas plays host to Wilder versus Fury II, which will be available on pay-per-view around the world. The fight is a rematch after the split decision draw on Dec. 1, 2018.
On Feb. 5, Betfred partnered with Scientific Games to bring retail and online sports betting to Wind Creek Casino in Bethlehem, PA. The upcoming fight represents the brand’s first major chance to shine in the spotlight.
Bout to bring attention to Betfred
UK-based Betfred is the largest independent retail bookmaker in the world. The company has more than 1,650 betting shops in the United Kingdom.
Betfred debuted its first sports betting operation in the United States at Iowa’s Grand Falls Casino on Jan. 27. It aims to be live in four states, including Pennsylvania, by the end of the year.
The sponsorship of a marquee fight like Wilder vs. Fury II should earn Betfred more brand recognition as it expands stateside.
Tom Brown, president of TGB promotions, and Bob Arum, chairman of top rank, said in a joint statement:
“We’re happy to have Betfred as an official sponsor for the highly anticipated Wilder versus Fury II rematch. This is a 50-50 fight for the heavyweight championship of the world and we’re sure that fans all around the globe will be watching to see all of the drama unfold.”
Many are calling Wilder versus Fury II the biggest fight of the year. It is, literally, the biggest title fight in history. Wilder, at 6’7″, and Fury, at 6’9″, combine for the greatest total height for a fight ever in a bout for the WBC.
Boxing new to Betfred portfolio
Betfred boss and founder Fred Done commented:
“I’m delighted to be a sponsor of the most anticipated fight of the year. And if Wilder versus Fury II is anything like the first fight, we are in for a superb night.”
The Wilder-Fury II sponsorship is a departure from other events in Betfred’s extensive portfolio.
Betfred also sponsors:
- World Snooker Championship
- British Masters
- World Matchplay Darts
- Rugby League’s Super League
- Royal Ascot
What’s next for Betfred in PA?
Expect retail sports betting at Wind Creek during the first half of 2020. The target for mobile betting is “in advance of the 2020-21 NFL season.”
But there is a big issue Wind Creek has to tend to first. They have yet to file a sports betting application with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB).
Betfred applied for an operator’s license with the PGCB in January. However, Wind Creek will need to apply and be granted a sports betting before it can launch operations.
