Barstool Sportsbook Paving the Way for App Launches in Major Sports Cities

Barstool Sportsbook Expanding to Major Sports Cities

Barstool Sports may have a place for you, aspiring social media moguls.

Love sports? Sports betting? Spend your life on social media platforms? Dote on Barstool Sports’ mix of sports, gossip, bizarre news, viral videos and frat boy humor?

If you live in or near Detroit, Boston or Denver — towns in states where their part-owner, Penn National Gaming, plans to soon launch its mobile Barstool sports betting app — Dave Portnoy and the Stoolie gang might have a job for you.

A city in New Jersey, while not named, would also make sense, since NJ is on Barstool’s horizon, though the Garden State lacks a sports hub town.

Penn National wants Barstool launched ASAP in Michigan

Barstool could launch in Michigan later this month. The Michigan Gaming Control Board meets on Tuesday, Dec. 8, according to our sister publication PlayMichigan.

Penn National’s leader, Jay Snowden, wants the Barstool app live in Michigan as soon as it is approved. So far, the app is only live in PA, the regional gambling company’s home state.

Barstool got a late start in the Pennsylvania sports betting market, but that would not be the case in the Wolverine State.

Looking for city social media site runners

Under the headline We Want You and an illustration of Portnoy dressed as Uncle Sam, the irreverent Barstool site yesterday posted:

In our never ending conquest to get to the moon Barstool Sports is expanding its network and launching social media accounts in every major city across the country. Think Barstool Boston, Barstool Detroit, Barstool Denver, etc. and we are looking for social media managers to run these accounts centered around these cities.

The post pointed to Barstool’s Twitter site, @BarstoolPhilly.

The listing cited Twitter, but other social media sites, such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, are also mentioned.

Barstool has a qualifications list

Listed qualifications include:

  • This person should eat, sleep and shit the internet.
  • We want a creative person who is highly motivated on their own.
  • This person should have a good feel for what Barstool Sports is and how social media platforms operate.
  • This person should know everything and anything that goes on in their respective city (sports, funny news, viral videos, etc.).
  • Any 18+ guy or girl in any major city across the country.

Barstool already has a “Campus Viceroy network” at some major sports-oriented universities, and the city formats will be similar, according to the notice.

Not for everyone

There were many retweets, comments and likes.

But not everyone hailed the news.

For instance, @TheSportMouth responded: “If barstool wasn’t literally the scum of sports media, people might actually be interested.”

And one tweeted response questioned the salary, which is unstated.

The listing states positions are paid and include an incentive program.

A spokesperson for Barstool did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.
